Welcome to DeMotte Elementary School! I am humbled to serve as Principal of our great school and in our community. Here at DeMotte Elementary School, our mission is to Educate, Inspire, and Empower our students. It is our goal to provide learning experiences that are engaging and rigorous for all students! DeMotte Elementary was named as a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School. This prestigious distinction shows that the United States Department of Education recognizes all of the hard work and commitment that makes DeMotte Elementary students achieve at high levels.

It is my strong belief that it still takes a 'village' or 'team' working together, to raise a child. Therefore, at DeMotte Elementary you will find that our teachers, students, and parents/guardians are what make us a strong and caring school community. We appreciate your on-going support as your child enters the classroom, learns, and grows throughout the year.

As our school leader, I believe that the safety and security of all our students is of utmost importance. Because of our dedication to take the safety of students and schools seriously, Kankakee Valley Schools has partnered with local law enforcement and is pleased to have multiple student resource officers assigned to our schools. At DeMotte Elementary, we have multiple safety and security measures in place and regularly review plans and procedures. Some of our safety measures are easily seen by parents and members of the community, while others are not so visible. We ask for your cooperation and patience in keeping all of our students safe. One way we keep students safe is that we identify all visitors coming into our school. Please do not be surprised if you are asked to show a photo ID upon entering the building or picking up your child from school. We understand that this may feel like an inconvenience, but please understand, the safety of our students and staff is paramount.

As a school community, we are committed to providing all children access to the best education possible and will work diligently for your children. We are proud of our hard working teachers and staff members. I may be biased, but I believe they are the BEST in the state of Indiana! I truly feel blessed to serve as your principal here at DeMotte Elementary School. As a parent or community member, I want to encourage you to consider getting involved here at DeMotte Elementary School in our PTO, or as a volunteer! I look forward to working with you, our community most importantly, our students!

Bullying and Harassment

Bullying and Harassment Policy

In compliance with House Enrolled Act No. 1423; Kankakee Valley Schools has developed a plan to prevent bullying in our schools. The plan addresses the four sections of Indiana’s anti-bullying legislation. Implementation of the plan is the responsibility of School Safety Specialists, Counselors, and Building Administrators.

Kankakee Valley Schools provides training to the school corporation’s employees and volunteers who have direct, ongoing contact with students concerning the schools bullying prevention policy, plans, and procedures. Students will also be introduced to an anti-bullying based curriculum.

Kankakee Valley Schools is committed to providing students a safe and nurturing environment. KVSC has implemented an anonymous reporting system for anyone who is a victim of bullying or witnesses bullying at school. The form allows students, parents, and any community member to anonymously report bullying through a link on the KVSC website. Dress Code

All students must come dressed neatly and appropriately. A student should be attired and groomed in such a way as to reflect credit to himself, his family, community standards, and his school. Just as later in life many jobs and social functions require appropriate dress, there is an appropriate way to dress for school. Any form of dress or hairstyle which is considered contrary to good hygiene orwhich is distracting or disruptive in appearance and detrimental to the educational mission of the school will not be permitted. Clothing should be clean. Holes or rips must be at the knee or below. Attire advertising alcoholic beverages, tobacco, drugs, as well as clothing or buttons with obscene, offensive, inappropriate, suggestive, or questionable printing on them will not be permitted. Any garments that could damage school property may not be worn to school. Undergarments must not be exposed. In general, hats, sunglasses, visors, bandana hats, head coverings of any kind, etc., are not to be worn in the building. Footwear must always be worn. “Flip-flop” shoes or high heels are not allowed. No clothing may be
worn which shows parts of the body not normally seen. Clothing must be worn at waist level and must completely cover underwear and must be worn so that the midriff is not exposed. “Halter” tops, bare midriff blouses, slippers, pajama-type clothing, and pants worn low are inappropriate school wear. Shorts must be of proper length; no “short” shorts. During cold weather students should come dressed warmly enough to spend recess outdoors. Items normally worn as "outdoor clothing" such as coats are not to be worn in the classroom unless permission is granted. Hats are to be removed when in the building. Hats are worn outside or anywhere on school property or school transportation. No items may be worn which could create a health or safety hazard (metal heel plates, spike shoes, shoes with skates, safety pins, or long earrings). Any item that includes a heavy chain, spiked bracelet, or spiked necklace is forbidden. No policy can address all situations. The administration will make the final determination whether or not the dress or appearance meets acceptable criteria.
